JPP~How it all got started.

July 30, 2009 News, Personal

I’ll be honest, when I first started wedding photography I had no clue what I was doing. I just knew I wanted to be a part of that day, when romance is in the air, people are happy, pretty dresses, pretty colors… ahhh, I’m a cornball! I knew photography, but not wedding photography. Trust me, there’s a difference.

My prices were, I think, around $695 for a wedding. All day coverage, as many rolls of film (yes, film) as needed, a very traditional Tap white wedding album holding 200  4×6 slip in images, and the negatives. I did my first wedding show with absolutely no idea what I was in for, having never even attended one as a bride before. I set up my booth with what I thought looked good, and later got compliments on how unique it was (again, because I didn’t know what to do!!) I remember a very well known photographer was introduced to me and immediately said “You need to raise your prices”. I based my prices on my experience. He had waaaay more, along with the fancy books and all, which I had no clue how to make then). I said, ‘I will, when I can do what you do”. I didn’t realize he thought I was good enough and was, indirectly, low balling him or stealing some clients with my $695 price. Heck, I had never even priced out wedding photographers. I did no research. For our own wedding we hired a friend’s uncle because we, like everyone else, wanted to save money and he did some photography ‘on the side’, but not wedding photography. Who cares?? It was next to nothing. And, that’s exactly what I got.

(BTW, this October is our 20 year wedding anniversary and I would LOVE to have a great photo shoot with my husband!)

Since then, I have basically taught myself the art of wedding photography. Of course, I learned lighting and different techniques and all about exposures and shutter speeds and so on from different mentors, like Ty at Ty Photography. Check him out, he’s got the senior market cornered and is phenominal!

But, I can honestly say, I shadowed a wedding photographer for one or two weddings back in 1998 and thought I can do this. And, I believed I could do it even better because this person spent no attention on detail, on learning what the bride and groom wanted, anything. It was like Smile. Okay. Thank you. Next.

I knew I wanted more. I knew they deserved more. I wanted to give them more.

A client sent me this link to    Seattle Bride Magazine with very kind words calling me a “pro” and wanting me to share what I do and why I do it and why I should charge what I do and not feel bad about doing so. (which, is this area, is pretty darn comparable)

I still don’t compare myself with others. To this day I rarely look at other local photog sites in this area. I like to get my inspiration from photographers out of state, like California, North Carolina (hey Millie!) Florida, Atlanta, and from magazines-fashion and wedding. Quite honestly, most of my inspiration comes from YOU, my clients. I swear, I feed off of my clients personalities, clothing, attitudes… that’s what makes the shoots so special, and unique to each.

Now, I am blessed to photograph engagement session, weddings, maternity, the birth, (yes, I am in the delivery room!) newborn, a few seniors by referal or request, families, children, and intimate sessions. Through these sessions, my clients have become my friends, allowing me clients for life <3

Amirah, thanks for sharing this article with me on Facebook and for believing in my abilities enough to trust me with your photography needs, calling me a “pro”. I have the BEST CLIENTS EVER!

And since every post needs a picture, this one from from a Baby Story of Jamie & Jason that will be posted soon!

July 28, 2009 Children, FUN!

About a month ago I was asked to photograph the grandchildren of a friend of mine (who totally doesn’t look like a grandma!) So off we ventured to Side Cut Park in Maumee. All day long the skies threatened rained but we decided to give it a chance anyway. Just as we arrived, the sky turned dark gray and rain poured down by the buckets full! Needless to say, we had to reschedule. I offered to try it out the next morning as one of the children were here from Texas and leaving soon, so we met again. I didn’t get very many “portrait” style images as, with rain, we all know comes mud puddles. And, with three little boys, what do you think happened?? Yeah, SPLASH!

This little guy is just learning to stand on his own! How cute is this??!

Once the first one jumped in, it wasn’t long until the other stripped down and joined his cousin!

Cobb_0144

This was waaaay more fun than smiling AT the camera!

Cobb_0147

yeah, that’s what it’s all about!

I think this is the only genuine smile we got from him!

This precious little guy stayed clean though!

Kenadi~ 6 months

July 26, 2009 Babies, Personal

When Lexe contacted me about her daughter Kenadi’s 6 month photos she was so excited because she was one of our fREE tO bE mE GC winners, and she wanted to capture what fun things Kenadi is doing at this age. The scene for the photo session was  at Lexe’s mother’s home in Gibsonburg, where Lexe grew up. Her mom had transformed Lexe’s old room into a nursery for Kenadi since she was her caregiver while Lexe works at Toledo Hospital as a NICU nurse. The nursery was done completely in Pottery Barn, with a soft green and white pallette. What an adorable room for an adorable girl!

For Kenadi, grabbing her cute little toes is a favorite pastime these days…

Even though we didn’t get great big drooly smiles, I love her cute little faces she makes :)

Her newborn images were taken by another photographer, a very talented Jennifer Mott, and we wanted to make some more images using those same home furnishings showing her growth.

I think this is my favorite shot of the day, but I couldn’t decide if I liked it in black and white…

Kennedy~1 year!

July 24, 2009 Babies, Children

Photographing a one year old is a feat in itself…once they start crawling and walking there is no stopping them! When Megan contacted me about birthday pictures for Kennedy’s one year we had planned on Maumee Bay, but when Megan mentioned on her Facebook page about going to a regatta on her family’s boat one weekend I had the idea of shooting Kennedy’s one year pictures on the docks and the boat for something unique and meaningful to them! What a great idea! I never would have thought of that! Megan announced. (see, friend me on Facebook, I’ll help you make your photo shoot unique!)

So, off to the docks I went to capture the wonder-full curiosity of Kennedy. Although she had been on the boat several times already, little ones always find new things to explore, and I had a blast just capturing her “doing her thing”!

We started off with a walk down the docks to see what we could see…

Blowing kisses… SWAAAKKKK!

In between clothes changes she leaned over the back of the boat (about gave grandpa a heart attack with no life vest on!) I love the flag in the back.

I love the feeling I get when I walk into a clients home for a  photo shoot and see my work displayed all over! I photographed Sarah & Jason’s UNVEILED session exactly a year ago quickly fell in love with this sweet couple! When Sarah told me of their great news that they were expecting I couldn’t wait for her belly to get nice and round and do belly shots! This is what I saw when I walked into their home…

SJ_0003

I usually wait until after the birth to display all the baby story shots, but I wanted to give Sarah a sneak peek of these

SJ_0009

Sarah has this natural beauty to her that she is not even aware of, which makes her even more beautiful!

SJ_0024

As breathtaking as she is, she is just as sweet and kind as well on the inside. I think Jason knows this to be true as well.

This sign is Ashtyn’s room says it all…

SJ_0016

I mean, come on?? Can this be any more beautiful??

SJ_0060

As we went driving to find another location close to the house, I spotted this field with sunlight perfectly spilling down on it.
